[Insurance Article] Cover Florida insurers announced

Three South Florida-based insurance companies are among the six selected to provide low-cost insurance to Floridians who are uninsured through the state’s Cover Florida plan.

Gov. Charlie Crist said Thursday that Medical Health Plan of Florida, JMH Health Plan and Total Health Choice made the list. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida and United Healthcare, statewide providers, along with Florida Health Care Plan, which operates in Volusia and Flagler counties, also will be part of the program. Nine companies applied.

“The selected insurance companies have designed Cover Florida plan proposals that provide an affordable, quality health insurance product for Florida’s uninsured citizens and maximize consumer choice,” Crist said in a statement.

Insurers carriers will offer at least two plans: one with catastrophic and hospital coverage, and one without. Plans also will include – at a minimum – coverage for preventive services, screenings, office visits, outpatient and inpatient surgery, urgent care, prescription drugs, durable medical equipment and diabetic supplies.

The insurance will be offered in early 2009 to Floridians who have been without coverage for at least six months.
