Phoenix Auto Insurance: Safe Driving For Teens

There's advice for parents on how to talk to teens to make sure they practice safe driving habits.
The tips come on the heels of Phoenix ranking sixth in the nation for deadly teen holiday car crashes from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day.

Melissa Stoloff with Allstate Insurance says you steer the conversation like this. "It's a freedom. It's a lot of fun. But it's a very big responsibility and I think you and I need to go through what you're doing behind the wheel when I'm not in the car with you." She says to come to terms on issues like speeding and tickets, cell phones, music and other distractions, seat belts, number of friends in the car.

Stoloff says you should also go over time of day when they can drive and even school grades.
She says most parents believe teens are dangerous drivers, however "less parents think that their own teen is problem behind the wheel. Well, those statistics aren't matching and it's important for every parent to be having that conversation with their teen."

"And no matter how your teen might be performing in school, if you're not a passenger with them, you don't know what they're doing behind the wheel."

Allstate has a parent-teen driving contract you can actually print out where you can set agreed-upon rules and punishment if the rules get broken.
