Ohio homeowners insurance still cheaper

New data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners show Ohio homeowners continue to pay some of the lowest insurance premiums in the country.

Ohio Department of Insurance Director Mary Jo Hudson said Thursday that Ohioans paid an average homeowners’ insurance premium of $542 in 2006, the latest year of statistics from the national association. That’s down a few dollars from a $545 average in 2005 and nearly a third lower than the national average of $801. Ohio’s average premium was ranked the sixth-lowest in the nation, unchanged from 2005.

While premiums in Ohio nudged down slightly on average over the two-year period, they headed the other direction nationwide. The $801 average premium is up 4 percent from $767 in 2005, according to the association’s report.
